I haven’t been in this industry since the beginning, and so, I can’t tell where it originated, but it’s certainly an idea that came about when optimization and promotion of websites began. Well, no matter the origin, it’s a question that can often lead to wasted work and false expectations.

Before we answer how many pages you need for your site, here are a few things you should know.

If you do not have adequate web pages to define as well as promote your website, then you will only be held back. You need a place to post your content. You need a page for FAQs, Information, Products and basically, anything else that you’re trying to share. You need pages to accomplish this and if you have too few, then it will only hamper your campaign.

By spreading your idea too thin across numerous pages, the search engines will have a hard time determining which web page to rank. Human readers will ideally hurt your campaign by linking to different pages, which will confuse the search engines.

Ignore the search engines for a while. Ultimately, the visitors are the primary priority. Driving traffic to a website can be easy, but maintaining it tends to be rather difficult. The ultimate goal is to convert the leads to sales and having too many pages can confuse potential customers. Most of them don’t have the patience to stick around and figure out how your site operates.

Of course, there are a number of details that go into this aspect of choosing when to break ideas into small sub-pages and when to consolidate them into fewer pages, but that is the ultimate answer. Your website should contain only what is required.
